Pandemic Journal - Take One

It's Saturday night and as the day has passed, I've been reading all the news updates, ways to be prepared and suggestions for how to pass the time and one of the suggestions was to get a journal and keep track of all the things going on in the world during this uncertain time.

Yesterday - the President declared a National Emergency and the day before that, the MLB decided to suspend Spring Training and postpone the start of the regular season by two weeks. And the day before that the NBA cancelled the regular season, the NHL cancelled the regular season and the MLS ended their season as well... along with the NCAA and March Madness being cancelled. So - the sports are all gone.

After some discussions this morning, my family and I decided that maybe we needed to go to the store and get some things - just to be on the safe side. We didn't need toilet paper or cleaning supplies or anything like that... just thought maybe some additional grocery supplies and so after breakfast, we set out. We went to Costco and while I expected it to be nothing short of madness - it really wasn't. Granted - there wasn't really any bottled water or toilet paper left, but it was too crazy. People were very civil and we were able to get most everything we needed without too much fuss.

The other side of this story is the afternoon store(s) we went to - we popped into Lowe's and really only needed toilet seats but I had to snap this silly picture with the paper towels that they'd put out because they were out of toilet paper! Wal-Mart though... it was a different story altogether! There were shelves and shelves that had nothing on them: cold medicine, feminine products, toilet paper, eggs, milk, bread. frozen meals, meat, rice, beans... it was absolutely picked over. As we checked out, my phone alerted me to the news that Spain had followed Italy in establishing a ban on all travel in and out of the country...

Thankfully I was able to scrounge up enough canned beans and tomato sauce to make chili for dinner but the beans were on the top shelf and there were barely any left. My Mom said "well this is actually making me a little nervous..." We've decided to stay away from church tomorrow - just to be safe. While eating dinner tonight, the news announced that the European travel ban put in place on Thursday had extended to include the UK and Ireland with rumors that a domestic travel ban is forthcoming. So - that's where things stand as of now. It's an interesting world we are living in; it's always an interesting world, I suppose it's just a bit more so these days...
