Friday Favorites

It's Friday - and this week has; on a whole, been so much better than last week! It also seems like it has sped by, which means I'm sure that our upcoming vacation will speed by too! I cannot believe this trip we've been planning for the past few months is finally almost here!

England Bound - We are leaving on a jet plane this evening and flying to London! We will be staying with my younger sister and exploring the countryside from our home base! We plan to take in Sandringham, London, Cambridge, the Cotswolds, Stonehenge, Oxford, the Peak District and even more... including my sister's perfect small town!

I can't wait to be back at my sister's wonderful and perfectly English home, with it's slightly slanted walls, old beams and quirky charm - including a wonderful garden out back!

*******************************************

You guys - I suppose that's all for this Friday! I'm just excited to be almost to vacation time and getting to explore one of my favorite places with my husband, my little sister and my mother-in-law - three of my favorite people! Y'all have a wonderful weekend!

Recent Reads

I haven't posted about books in a long while - and I have been reading like a fiend! I am on my twentieth book for the year and that puts me somewhere like... 8 books ahead of schedule for my goal of thirty-five books read in 2023! I last posted about books in January and I've done quite a bit of reading since then, so I thought I'd share some of my favorites!

The Wedding Dress Sewing Circle by Jennifer Ryan - I'll confess I started this book way back in November of last year and I think I even took it on my honeymoon to have to read on the beach... but I never could get into it! Fast forward a few months and I absolutely loved this book!

In the Wedding Dress Sewing Circle, women come together during WWII to mend, repurpose and recycle clothing. Led by three spirited women, the sewing circle project to repair a wedding gown grows into mending wedding gowns for local brides and brides across the county. The spirited women also mend relationships and find new love.

Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Weyward by Emilia Hart - I must say, this has been my favorite read of the year so far! The book is a quick read, the story sucked me in and I read it in about forty-eight hours! I loved everything about the book and cannot recommend it enough!

In 2019, twenty-nine-year-old Kate Ayres flees London to escape an abusive relationship and find sanctuary in Weyward Cottage, in Crows Beck, Cumbria - a property left for her by her late Aunt Violet. As she embarks on rebuilding her life, her curiosity about the property prompts her to research her family history.

Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Someone Else's Shoes by JoJo Moyes - This was my March Book of the Month pick solely because two of my very favorite books (Me After You and The Giver of the Stars) were also written by JoJo Moyes. I love her writing style and this book was no exception - it was another excellent read!

Nisha Cantor lives the globetrotting life of the seriously wealthy, until her husband announces he wants a divorce and cuts her off. Nisha is determined to hang on to her glamourous life. But in the meantime, she must scramble to cope - and she doesn't even have the shoes she was; until a moment ago, standing in.

Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Daisy Jones & the Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid - I know I am behind the times on this one! I was really certain I was not going to like this book because of the style in which it was written (like an interview). However, I wanted to read the book before starting the show and once I started it, I couldn't put it down!

Daisy Jones & the Six follows a rock band in the 1970's from their rise in the LA music scene to becoming one of the most famous bands in the world and explores the reason behind their split at the height of their success.

Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

***********************************************

As you can see - this is mostly a list of the books I've really enjoyed in the last few months! I have liked most of the books I've read so far this year and I'm sure there will be more five star options before the year is done!

And in case anyone was interested - all the books I've read so far are below, including the book I just started yesterday (it's listed last).

  • Bringing Down the Duke by Evie Dunmore
  • Lady in Waiting by Anne Glenconner
  • The London Séance Society by Sarah Penner
  • What Lies in the Woods by Kate Alice Marshall

Wag Wednesday

If there is one thing Luna loves - it's a good nap. This girl (much like her Dad) can sleep anywhere, anytime but especially loves a good pillow and blanket for her snooze.

Singing, Shopping & the Salon!

Well. Another weekend has flown by and it's Monday again! It seems like the weekends pass so quickly - I'm looking forward to our upcoming vacation very much! But until Friday evening, it's work and life as usual!

Friday night Ryan and I were able to go see Brandon Lake in concert in nearby Leesburg - and it was such an incredible concert! Brandon Lake sings some of the most beautiful worship songs and the concert was just a huge time of worship, prayer and really amazing music! We loved the concert but man, when it was over at 10:15 - we were two tired folks!

We stayed at my parent's this weekend - and I think we were both pretty thrilled that our drive "home" after the concert was only about 50 minutes as opposed to 75! We crawled into bed shortly before midnight and I was really thrilled for some sleep, ha-ha!

Also - the picture below is a group "selfie" from the concert - you'll never be able to see Ryan and I, but I thought it was pretty cool to be able to have access to this really neat photo!

Saturday morning I woke up with a little of a headache - which is always a crummy way to start the day - but I took some medicine, had coffee and breakfast, and soldiered on! I had too many exciting things to do! While Ryan did some yard work around my parent's house (such a good son-in-law), I headed up the mountain to my friend Katie's house!

I haven't seen her or her babies since my wedding and so I spent a couple hours hanging out with them, having a charcuterie that she and her husband put together, stealing baby snuggles, looking at giant holes in the yard made by rocks and blowing bubbles! After I left, they requested that I come back and after some discussion - they decided the next time I come, I can bring Ryan.

Speaking of my Ryan - once I headed home, we cruised back over to Leesburg to hit the outlets and grab some things for our upcoming travels! I grabbed some jeans and tops, Ryan got new shoes and a rain jacket! We had a wonderful time shopping together, had a delicious dinner at Outback and then headed back to my parent's (our BnB for the weekend - if you will) for the evening!

Sunday after church, we had an awesome lunch at Texas Roadhouse (gotta love a free lunch - yay for gift cards) and then I got my nails done! My nails were free also, since I was one of 100 people to win a free dip nail from the salon when it opened back in September of last year! We made a quick Target run and then headed home - Ryan went to the Moose for a little while and I got some things done around the house!

We have started the packing for our trip to the UK - our flight leaves Friday evening, so we are counting down the days (and soon the hours) until we head out! Y'all have a wonderful week!

Friday Favorites

Well y'all - it's been a week. *sigh* I am so thankful for my job but this week, it has absolutely been a tough week. Happily, the weekend is here and so I wanted to share a little about the weekend ahead and some favorites or things I'm looking forward to!

Friday Night: Brandon Lake Miracle Nights - I am so excited for this evening! Ryan and I are going to see Brandon Lake in concert in Leesburg and I can't wait! We've had these tickets since way back in December and so we've been waiting for this concert for a while! I especially love Brandon's song(s) Gratitude and Just Like Heaven and cannot wait to hear them live and worship!

Saturday Things - I am absolutely looking forward to sleeping in on Saturday! Even if for me that might only mean like...7:15! I am excited about it! I'm headed up the mountainside on Saturday morning to spend time with my friend Katie and her precious brood of little people! Her oldest was my ring bearer and was just the most precious - we've been buds since he was born! I can't wait to catch up Katie, chat with the kiddos and snuggle her precious baby girl!

Depending on the weather on Saturday (right now it's supposed to rain) we will craft the rest of our Saturday afternoon, evening and Sunday! There are plenty of options and so we will just have to sort out what works for the rest of our weekend. Some of the plans on the table are...
  • Fox Meadow Winery
  • Dinner at Longhorn Steakhouse
  • Shopping
  • Hiking & Exploring the VA State Arboretum with Luna
It's currently in the 80's but once the predicted rain arrives on Saturday, Sunday will be a chilly 55! Regardless of what the weather decides to cook up, we will be doing some shopping and on Sunday afternoon I'll be getting my nails done! We will be shopping because in one week we leave for...

...The United Kingdom! Ryan and I are headed across the pond to spend a week with my sister and Ryan's Mom will be joining us; it will be their first time visiting the United Kingdom and I cannot wait!

So next week will be all about getting the house in shipshape, getting our bags all packed, dropping Luna at the pet-sitter and heading across the pond for a week of sight-seeing! I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend and I'll be back with you on Monday!

Wag Wednesday

When I tell you that Luna has perfected her side-eye - this picture is proof of that statement. I was telling her that I loved her, as I left for work. And this was the face I got. *facepalm*

Sunburnt and Sassy

The weekend passed like a whirlwind guys - I cannot believe it's already Tuesday! I had a pretty full schedule for the weekend and so I think that's why it flew by so quickly! Time flies when you're having fun - and this weekend was fun!

The perks of living in a small town mean that Ryan and I were able to walk to Woodstock Brewhouse on Friday night for dinner! The weather was really lovely, so we walked down and had our dinner and contemplated walking to the ice cream place as well - but discovered at 7:59 that they close at 8:00 because they are still on Spring hours! So we just ended up walking on home - it was a lovely evening with or without ice cream!

Saturday I was up with the sunrise (shortly before 7) to attend a women's conference at my dear friend's church. I cracked up while having my coffee because Luna was using my Bible as her pillow - I told Ryan she was meditating on the Word of the Lord. :)

The conference was a really wonderful experience - the speaker was excellent and I really enjoyed being able to spend the day with my friend, worshipping and listening to the Word together! The blessing of Godly friends in my life is hard to express but it is wonderful to share faith with someone you can also share your laughter and tears with as well! To my great surprise - I also won three door prizes: a pair of earrings, a flower and one of the five gift baskets! What a day!

Ryan and I had a quiet evening in on Saturday night - Ryan cooked burgers, we started doing some laundry and tried to watch a movie but it didn't quite ever hook us. We ended up calling it a night pretty early since we had big plans on Sunday!

Ryan's graduation gift from me was tickets to a DC Defenders football game! The DC Defenders are Washington DC's XFL team and they have been the best team in the newly created eight team league! The XFL season has ten games and this was the ninth of the season and the final home game. When all was said and done, the Defenders ended the game with an 8-1 record and their ticket punched to the first round of the playoffs with home field advantage!

The game is played similar to football but has some differences in game play - a lot of the rules are a little more similar to NCAA college football - and the extra point rule is where things are really unique! Once you score a touchdown, you can choose to go for one extra point (from 2 yards), two extra points (from 5 yards) or three extra points (from 10 yards). The games are televised and the game we attended on Sunday was a sold out crowd!

The one important thing I forgot where the game is concerned - I forgot to put on sunscreen and once the game ended, I was feeling a little warm! Sure enough, my pale self was a bright DC Defenders red once we got home - not a color you typically want your skin to be! Thank goodness for Aloe Vera!

Sunday evening was pretty laid back as well - we had a quick dinner and got ready for the work week ahead. Luna was exhausted... even though she'd been asleep most of the day anyway, ha-ha! It was such a great weekend but man did it pass way too quickly!

Wag Wednesday

Luna had a lovely Easter - she got a bright purple dragon, a tug toy and treats from the Easter Bunny and even got to try a slide at the park! I don't know how much she enjoyed the slide, ha-ha!

Life Lately - A Photo Dump

Well - prepare for a photo dump because that's what I've got for you. I realize it has been ages since I posted (it was actually last month) and life has been in full swing while I've been away from the blog. I'll do a little rewind, starting with this weekend and going back to my last post - a little life lately and a lot of pictures!

Easter was a beautiful day - the sun was shining and while it wasn't warm, it also wasn't cold and for that, I am very thankful! This was Ryan and I's third Easter together! We had been dating for about a month on our first Easter, we were engaged on our second Easter and now, here we are - old married people on our third Easter!

Our church service was excellent and it's always so lovely to see everyone dressed nicely for Easter! I have to admit that there is a part of me that misses wearing dresses and more "fanciful" clothes to church each week... but then again, there is a part of me that likes the ease of dressing down! Obviosly it's a real conflict for me, ha-ha!

We had a lovely Easter lunch at my parent's house and while I don't have a picture of the table, with our combined cooking forces, I can assure you that everything tasted lovely! After our lunch, Ryan and I took Luna to a nearby park - the Shenandoah County Park - which is really beautiful and has wonderful walking paths, a playground (the swings are great) and there are even cows!

I don't have pictures for the rest of our weekend - but we were pretty busy on Saturday! My parents came over and my Dad helped Ryan tear down the deck on the back our house and my Mom and I did some work indoors. After lunch, my parents left and Ryan weeded out our front bed (I helped) and then after a quick run to Food Lion - we had a really chill evening! We had the most amazing beef roast that we cooked in the crock pot and had a bit of a movie night - we watched Constantine & The Count of Monte Cristo!

Continuing to recap life in reverse, last Sunday found us rolling through West Virginia on the way home from Nashville and along the way, we stopped in at the Greenbrier Resort - my very first time to ever set foot in the place!

This hotel in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia is probably best known for it's Dorothy Draper designed interiors that are colorful, chaotic and very opulent. Bright colors (mostly bright) and patterns mix together on every surface with stripes, florals, checks, polka dots, plaids and more are just littered across every surface for an eye-popping decorative effect! Also - the little eggs above - are all made of chocolate!

We wandered all around the resort and I decided that Ryan and I should celebrate our fifth anniversary here - we could go skeet shooting, take an ATV ride, swim in the most grandiose indoor pool I've ever seen, dine at the multiple restaurants and even tour an underground bunker that was once used by Congress, Senate and the President - whoa. We also made a quick stop at the New River Gorge Overlook, and yes - that's snow you see in the background - because the weather can't ever make up it's mind!

Saturday (going in reverse - I know, confusing) was the day we started home from Nashville and we stopped at two spots en route from Tennessee to West Virginia: Buffalo Trace Distillery and The Corvette Museum! Buffalo Trace Distillery is the oldest operating distillery in the United States and dates its productions back to the late 1700's! The tour was very informative and the spirits... well... they were intense, ha-ha!

Also - please look at the black stuff on the buildings! That's whiskey fungus and it grows like wildfire in the presence of alcohol! I mistakenly called it mold and the tour guide freaked out - goodness sir, I am so sorry! The other stop was the Corvette Museum and it was filled with all the corvettes from every era, model and style - and it also had an area of the museum where in 2014 a 30 foot sinkhole opened and swallowed eight corvettes!

I would love to say we had excellent meals on Saturday - and they weren't terrible - but I would advise that if you're in Kentucky, avoid Reno's Roadhouse. That's all I'll say about that.

The most important part of our trip was on Friday evening - Ryan's graduation from Sales Fix Academy was what motivated our entire trip and I am so proud of him! He spent the last six months in classes, watching videos in the evenings, taking online tests and just working hard to accomplish this goal! We attended his graduation service at the new Sales Fix offices and I was absolutely the proud wife as I watched my husband cross the stage and graduate!

A part of his graduation was spending all day on Friday (from 8-5) in class at Sales Fix Academy - so he was unable to explore a bit with us. My parents came along to cheer Ryan on as he graduated and while Ryan was in class on Friday, we went to Cheekwood House & Gardens and also checked out the Nashville Parthenon. The weather on Friday was - a little moody - but happily by the time we arrived at Cheekwood Gardens, the sun was attempting to shine!

Cheekwood Gardens (and House) were beautiful and the tulips that were everywhere were in near perfect bloom! I couldn't tell you much about the house - it's huge - because we just toured the gardens, which were very expansive! There were walking trails, art installations (some of them very odd) and fountains! There was also a really cool model train exhibit that my Dad absolutely was thrilled over!

Earlier in the day we'd popped over to the Nashville Parthenon - the only life-size replica of the Parthenon is Athens, Greece. We have been here before years ago when visiting Nashville on Spring Break, but I was glad to get a chance to see it again. It's stunning and makes me that much more invested in one day seeing the original in Athens!

The statue inside the Parthenon (much like the original in Athens) is of the goddess Athena - goddess of war, handicraft and practical reason. She holds the god Nike in her hand and her shield in emblazoned with the head of the gorgon Medusa. Nashville has been known as the "Athens of the South" as it's a city focused on being a place of learning and enlightenment... I guess this was before it was a place of country music and honky tonks? The statue of Athena (at 42 feet tall) is the tallest indoor statue in the United States!

We stayed in Franklin while we were in the Nashville area and when we arrived on Thursday afternoon, after checking in we spent some time exploring the downtown Nashville area and having dinner at the Cajun Steamer! Ryan has never been to Nashville - so we made a quick tour of downtown, took some pictures and did a little line dancing!

Ryan absolutely loves seafood and could eat his weight in it - which wouldn't be a ton - but you get the idea. He thoroughly enjoyed his seafood platter at the Cajun Steamer and he and my Dad enjoyed the giant shrimps a little too much, ha-ha!

We wandered a couple of the streets of downtown Nashville and I have to say I'm surprised by the number of homeless people we saw - I don't remember the homeless population being so prevalent the last time I was in Nashville, but I think I was also around twenty-two and maybe I didn't notice things like that as much? We popped into the Wild Horse Saloon to try our line dancing skills and arrived at the perfect time to learn the Wild Horse Stampede!

We also walked on the John Siegenthaler Pedestrian Bridge - it is located right in the heart of downtown and offers great views on the Nashville area! It also seemed to be a favorite spot for the local jogging population. All in all - while Nashville is just fine, I think I enjoy the Franklin and Brentwood areas surrounding Nashville a little bit more.

Thursday was when we arrived in the Nashville area - and we made several stops before we arrived at our hotel and explored downtown Nashville. Ryan and I just finished Dave Ramsey's Financial Peace University and so we took the opportunity to stop by Ramsey Solutions while we were in the Brentwood area! The complex cost $72 million to build - and was paid for in cash! *blown away*

We had lunch on Thursday at Loveless Café - a Nashville must visit with perfectly cooked Southern dishes! We had to wait almost an hour to be seated, but once we got our food I can confirm that it was absolutely worth it! The pork barbecue, hash brown casserole, mac & cheese and biscuits were so very tasty! It's definitely worth a stop if you're in the area - you won't be disappointed!

The first stop on our weekend journey (all this reverse business has been wild - I know) was Buc-ee's and while it's technically a gas station, I really think it's more of an experience. There are more gas pumps than you can imagine and you can go into the store itself and leave with a housewarming gift, a baby gift, beef jerky, coffee, clothes, a kayak, perhaps a new grill, some brisket and most definitely some Beaver Nuggets. It was wild - that's all I can say, ha-ha!

I hope in the future Ryan and I can return to The Bristol - it was a great hotel to stay in and I'm sad we only had one night to stay! All in all, the last few weeks have been a wonderful whirlwind.
