So - Germany is Beautiful!

I have returned and let me tell you – Germany is quite beautiful. Certainly, I only saw the Bavaria region of the country of Germany, but it was definitely stunning. No doubt about it. I don’t know that Germany was ever near the top of my travel list but I think I’ve changed my opinion a bit after my recent visit to the country!

This post will be short and sweet – I just wanted to share about our first afternoon in the Bavarian countryside and then I’ll post later in the week about the days and things we saw while in the country. Our flight to the country was good, although I don’t think I’ll ever adjust to trying to sleep sitting up in an economy seat. Whoosh. We stayed at Edelweiss Resort in Garmisch-Partenkirchen; this is a military resort and so you must be active-duty or retired military or be sponsored by someone to stay here. I was sponsored by my Dad – thanks Dad!

The surrounding countryside was absolutely stunning. I took pictures from every vantage point possible, but I don’t know that a picture could ever quite do it justice! Once we got all checked in, we walked into the little town of Garmisch to eat an early lunch. The little restaurant had a menu filled with all the best German options: wiener schnitzel (it’s not a wiener y’all), spätzle, potatoes with parsley, bratwurst and sauerkraut… among many other things!

I went with the potato soup to start – and let me tell you – I ate some delicious meals on this trip but the potato soup I had at the little restaurant in Garmisch; it might have been the best thing I ate all week! I also had cordon bleu made with pork and parsley potatoes and it was all very delicious! I should mention that we definitely took a nap for a couple of hours after eating our lunch. That overnight flight was killer!

Once everyone was a little more well-rested, we drove into the central portion of Garmisch to have dinner and we ate at a burger place! I got the burger special for the day: the Pickle Boy! It was a burger with a pickle mayo on it and let me tell you, it was delicious! We then wandered the little town (it’s not that little) and quickly learned that a lot of shops close around 7:00 in Germany. There isn’t a lot of late night (or later night) shopping, but we did stop into a few shops before 7 PM. We also stopped in at a little café and had cappuccino and dessert – I had a rum and cranberry cake that was delicious!

We took the rest of the evening pretty easy. Lindsey, her boyfriend James, and I went to the hot tub at the resort: after 8:30 it was adults only! The resort also did a BBQ with fireworks since it was Labor Day Weekend and so the first day in the country certainly ended with a bang!
