May Book Review

Well - I didn't read quite as much in the month of May - but I did get three books in and so I'd love to share those with you for my May Book Review! I'm hoping to pick up my reading volume again in June and plow through some books; I have about five things in my TBR (to be read) list, so there's definitely hope for more books read!

House of Flame & Shadow by Sarah J Maas - Bryce Quinlan never expected to see a world other than Midgard, but now that she has, all she wants is to get back. Everything she loves is in Midgard: her family, her friends, her mate. Stranded in a strange new world, she's going to need all her wits about her to get home again. And that's no easy feat when she has no idea who to trust.

Hunt Athalar has found himself in some deep holes in his life, but this one might be the deepest of all. After a few brief months with everything he ever wanted, he's in the Asteri's dungeons again, stripped of his freedom and without a clue as to Bryce's fate. He's desperate to help her, but until he can escape the Asteri's leash, his hands are quite literally tied.

In the sequel to House of Earth & Blood and House of Sky & Breath, the Crescent City series reaches new heights as Bryce & Hunt's world is brought to the brink of collapse - with its future resting on their shoulders.

Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐of five - I really enjoyed this conclusion to the Crescent City series and for the most part was pleased with the "happy" endings that most of the cast of characters got. I really liked the crossover element with some of the characters from the the  world, but I also felt like a couple aspects of the storyline were awfully coincidental/just worked out too perfectly! All in all though - it was a great book!

The Paradise Problem by Christina Lauren - Anna Green thought she was marrying Liam "West" Weston for access to subsidized family housing while at UCLA. She also thought she'd signed divorce papers when the graduation caps were tossed, and they both went on their merry ways.

Three years later, Anna is a starving artist living paycheck to paycheck while West is a Stanford professor. He may be one of four heirs to the Weston Foods conglomerate, but he has little interest in working for the heartless corporation his family built from the ground up. He is interested, however, in his one-hundred-million-dollar inheritance. There's just one catch.

Due to an antiquated clause in his grandfather's will, Liam won't see a penny until he's been happily married for five years. Just when Liam thinks he's in the home stretch, pressure mounts from his family to see this mysterious spouse, and he has not choice but to turn to the one person he's afraid to introduce to his one-percenter parents - his unpolished, not-so-ex wife.

But in the presence of his family, Liam's fears quickly shift from whether the feisty, foul-mouther , paint-splattered Anna can play the part to whether the toxic world of wealth will corrupt someone as pure of heart as his surprisingly grounded and loyal wife. Liam will have to ask himself if the price tag on his flimsy cover story is worth losing true love that sprouted from a lie.

Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐of five - I loved this book! It was my Book of the Month pick and I am so glad I chose it! The story is the perfect rom-com; it would make an amazing movie, anyone up for making it? I loved the characters, the story line and especially loved the island they stayed on... sign me up!

Elizabeth & Margaret: the Intimate World of the Windsor Sisters by Andrew Morton - They were the closest of sisters & the best of friends. But when, in a quixotic twist of fate, their uncle Edward VIII decided to abdicate the throne, the dynamic between Elizabeth & Margaret was dramatically altered. Forever more, Margaret would have to curtsey to the sister she called "Lilibet". And bow to her wishes.

Elizabeth would always look upon her younger sister's antics with a kind of stoical amusement but Margaret's struggle to find a place & position inside the royal system - & her fraught relationship with its expectations - was often a source of tension. Famously, the Queen had to inform Margaret that the Church & the government would not countenance her marrying a divorcee, Group Captain Peter Townsend, forcing Margaret to choose between keeping her title & royal allowances or her divorcee lover.

From the idyll of their cloistered early life, through their hidden world time lives, into the divergent paths they took following their father's death & Elizabeth's ascension to the throne, this book explores their relationship over the years. The book offers insight into these two drastically different sisters - one resigned to duty & responsibility, the other resistant to it - & the lasting impact they have had on the Crown, the royal family & the way it has adapted to the changing mores of the twentieth century.

Rating: ⭐⭐⭐.5 of five - I should first of all say that for my rating purposes, a 3.5 isn't a bad rating! I really enjoyed this book and found that it was filled with detail and new information, all told in a really appealing way! I really enjoyed the read and would recommend it to anyone who is a lover of all things royal family!

Our WV Home - Scripture Verses

Our West Virginia home is coming right along - and we knew once we saw that a roof had been put over the top (not the completed roof, obviously) and before the sheetrock went up, we wanted to do something special for the foundation of our home.

Ryan and I are - first and foremost - children of God. Our relationship with Christ is the most important in each of our lives and we entered into our marriage knowing that God would always be our #1 one - and we would be each other's #2. We started our marriage with Christ as the foundation and so we thought about it and decided we wanted the Word to be written on the literal foundations of our home.

So after church last Sunday - armed with Sharpies and our Bible app (and some insight from our pastors) we headed to our house and got to work on the foundation! We had a gorgeous day outside and were able to dream and pray over this house that we will call home in late Summer/early Autumn.

We didn't have access to the second floor yet - and since we have a weekend away this weekend - it will be two weeks before we see our house again, so we aren't sure how much progress will have been made by the second week of June. If we are able to write additional scriptures on the walls of the second floor, we will definitely add more verses - but if not, we feel like we have surrounded our home with the Word of God.

We are so blessed to be able to build this home and look forward to the life we will build together there - and it just seemed fitting to make sure our home's foundation started with the Words that govern our day to day life. I'm so glad we were able to take the time to do this and it's also nice to know that the people building our house are seeing the Words of the Lord around them as they work.

The verses we chose (and had shared with us) are the verses listed below.

"You will be blessed when you come in & blessed with you go out." - Deuteronomy 28:6

"But as for me & my house, we will serve the Lord." - Joshua 24:15

"I will lie down in peace & sleep; for you alone, O Lord, make me dwell in safety." - Psalm 4:8

"But seek first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness, and all these things shall be added unto you." - Matthew 6:33

"The Lord bless you & keep you, the Lord make his face shine upon you & be gracious to you. The Lord lift his countenance upon you & give you peace." - Numbers 6:24

"Now therefore let it please you to bless the house of your servant, that it may continue before you forever; for you, oh Lord have spoken it & with your blessing let the house of your servant be blessed forever." - 2 Samuel 7:29

"For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord. Plans to prosper you & not to harm you, plans to give you a hope & a future." - Jeremiah 29:11

"Love the Lord your God with all your heart & with all your mind & with all your strength. These commandments I give to you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home & when you walk along the road, when you lie down & get up. Tie them as symbols on your hands & bind them on your foreheads. Write them on the doorframes of your house & gate." - Deuteronomy 6: 5-9

"Peace I leave with you, my peace I give you." - John 14:27

"Praise be to the Lord my Rock, who trains my hands for war, my fingers for battle." Psalm 144:1

"Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this, says the Lord Almighty and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of Heaven and pour out so much blessing that there will not be enough room to store it." - Malachi 3:10

The Three Day Weekend - Baseball & Memorial Day

Welcome back! I'm here to share the rest of our three-day weekend! After touring King Tut's tomb, we headed over to Yards Park to get some lunch at Due South... which ended up being Brunch instead of lunch, but it was still pretty delicious! I had the Chicken & Waffles with Tabasco Butter and Ryan had the Breakfast Burger - and of course, we couldn't miss the chance to stop into Ice Cream Jubilee and grab some ice cream before the game!

After getting our car parked for the third time in less than four hours (got to love the big city), we made our way to Nationals Park, where we ended up waiting in line to get in because apparently they now open the gates 80 minutes before the game, not two hours! We got our Lane Thomas bobbleheads and perused the Team Store... as you do... I ended up getting a City Connect visor and I was so glad to have it throughout the game!

It was so awesome to be at the ballpark again - a place that I spent so much time pre-COVID. After COVID, I was engaged and then newly married and life was busy! And that's not to say that life isn't still busy but we finally found time to get to a Nationals game and man - I remember how much I love going to games! It was so great to stroll the stadium and I even got a divine Cherry Blossom Cocktail that matched the cherry blossoms on my hat!

I have to admit - I don't really know the guys on my team very well anymore. Gone are the days of Scherzer and Strasburg and Zimmerman and now are the days of Finnigan and Thomas and Abrams... and I have to say that while last year, we weren't the best (to say the least), after watching this team this season - we have a chippy bunch of guys. I've never wavered in my love of the Nationals, but I do love to see a chippy bunch of guys out there giving it their all!

The game was great - Abe won the President's Race, Ryan and I shared a delicious tater tot, mac & cheese & pulled BBQ chicken bowl thing from See You Tater, we had really nice seatmates and best of all - the Nationals beat the Mariners 3-1! I hope we will be able to go to another game again this season and for years to come!

After a long drive home, our Saturday - that started at 8:30 with our drive into DC - ended with us crashing into bed shortly before 10! It was a long and full day, but such a good day too! Sunday after church, we helped serve hot dogs, chips and drinks to everyone between services - a way to provide food and outreach to people at church! It was a nice way to get to see so many people and serve those that attend our church!

The greatest thing about Sunday night was that we knew we could sleep in on Monday morning - and we did just that! After a leisurely Monday morning, we drove over to John Handley High School to see their Flags of Honor display - which was beautiful and poignant! We enjoyed walking around the school and taking in the display from all the angles; it was so nice to just sit, take in what Memorial Day is about and be still - and thankful.

Since the weather was fairly nice - and the rain they'd forecasted wasn't showing up - we made our way to the Third Battle of Winchester and did 2.5 miles on the trail that is part of the property. We made our way through wooded areas, fields and down to the stream before backtracking to our car. It was really nice to get outside and enjoy some beautiful outdoors.

The three day weekend was so nice - and we closed it out grilling with family - and of course, getting to bed early, ha-ha! Now, when is the next three day weekend on the calendar?
